Media Services

The media collection is available for use within the Media and Reserve Services department to all LMU OneCard holders. University faculty and staff may take out media items for extended use. All media materials for classroom use should be picked up and returned to the Media and Reserve Services Department. We unfortunately do not have the staffing to deliver.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Following are answers for the most often asked questions regarding the Von der Ahe Library's Media Services and Facilities:

Q: How do I place materials on RESERVE for my students to check out?
A: Faculty should fill out our RESERVE FORM indicating the author and title of the item as well as the time each student may use the time (1 hour, 3 hours, 1 day, etc.). You may place up to 20 articles, books, audio or video cassettes per class on Reserve each semester. For photocopied articles, copyright laws allow for a maximum of 5 copies each. Items from other libraries may not be placed on reserve. You must notify Rhonda Rosen, Department Head and Acting Reserves Coordinator at 310/338-7695 or via e-mail (rrosen@lmu.edu) at the end of each semester whether these items should remain on Reserve for the following semester. Otherwise, at the end of each semester, all materials will be returned. We do not assume responsibility for damage to or loss of personal items.

Q: How can I find out what videos the library owns?
A: Compact discs (CDs), LPs, maps, CD-ROM's, videos, videodiscs, DVDs, television and motion picture scripts, 16mm films and slide sets can all be found in LINUS, our online catalog. See our easy "Searching LINUS for Media Items".

Q: How do I check out media materials?
A: Faculty may check out three titles for a three day loan period using your bar-coded ID. [To obtain a bar-code, fill out a form at the Library's Circulation or Media & Reserve Services counter.] Materials may be reserved for a specific date and time by calling or emailing Michael Zuccaro. While the library, does not normally allow students to remove media outside the Media & reserve Services area, we have a faculty signed permission slip that will allow a student to take a specific item to class for presentation.

Q: Who do I go to for equipment usage?
A: All classroom equipment and the maintenance of said equipment is handled by the Classroom Management Office.

Q: What production services does Media & Reserve Services provide?
A: Provided you have first received permission from the appropriate copyright holders, we provide slide production, classroom and off-air video taping (broadcast and satellite), and editing and duplication for audio and video. Some of the services are provided for a fee, which can be paid by cash, check or interdepartmental charge. See production charges schedule.

Q: Can I use videos that I taped off the air at home, to show in my class?
A: You may record, off the air, any copyrighted broadcast (not pay Cable) TV transmission and retain the recording for a period of 45 consecutive calendar days after the recording date. The tape may be used once, or twice if necessary for instructional purpose, during the first 10 school days of this retention period. The balance of the 45 day period is for the teacher's evaluation. Upon conclusion of this retention period, the recording must be erased or destroyed. If you feel the this recording should be added to the University's audiovisual library, please contact Rhonda Rosen at 310/338-4584 or e-mail (rrosen@lmu.edu) for possible licensing permission or purchase. Click for more Public Performance Rights Information.

Q: What else can be found in the Media & Reserve Services area?
A:--a small but growing CD-ROM (PC computer) collection with a PC for viewing.
--Our microfilm / microfiche collection (journals, books and newspapers) can be viewed via reader / printers. @.20 a page.
--We have large and small maps for classroom use which can be checked out for a semester. We have a 5 map per semester limit. All of our map collection can be found in LINUS using Keyword (i.e. 'china' 'map').
